For a small city, Iligan City has many interesting things you can try. Most of what’s written below are about food but what Iligan can be proud of is their waterfalls. In fact Iligan City is nicknamed the City of Majestic Waterfalls.
Here are interesting things you can do and places to visit in Iligan City as part of my Travel Guide there.
1. Waterfalling
Waterfalling actually means waterfalls hopping and in Iligan you can do this as most of the waterfalls are just less than an hour from the city proper. But if you have limited time you should not miss Tinago Falls, Maria Cristina Falls and Dodiongan Falls.
If you have not been to the waterfalls of Iligan City, then you have not been to Iligan City.
2. Lechon
Of all the Lechons in the Philippines, this lechon from Iligan City is the best for me. And I know a lot of people who says that this is the best lechon in the country. Our family would even order lechon from Iligan to be brought to Manila during big gatherings. Don’t believe me? Try it first before you say anything.
3. Cheding’s Toasted Peanuts
If there’s one reason why should not tell people that you are heading to Iligan City, Cheding’s Toasted Peanuts is the reason. Everytime I go to Iligan many of those who knows the great taste of Cheding’s Toasted Peanuts would ask me to buy for them. I usually bring home about 4 kilogram of these due to friends/family ordering.
4. Weekend Night Market
The weekend night market only happens during Fridays and Saturdays from 6PM onwards. It’s the place where you can try the Spicy Lechon of Iligan City and there are lots of grilled food too.
If you’re looking for spicy lechon look for Edi’s Spicy Lechon.
5. Distillation Process Coffee of Kopi Luwak
It’s like coffee drinking mixed with chemistry laboratory. But it’s actually a brewing process of the coffee where they setup a contraption that looks like if came from the chemistry lab and they heat the water inside so that it would siphon and mix with the coffee granules.
This is better enjoyed without a camera.
6. Sunset Watching at Centennial Park
If you’re into sunset watching you should head out to Centennial Park. There you would see the sunset over the Iligan Bay. Just ignore the lovers who are dating on the side.
7. Foodtripping
Iliganons love food and they’re quite good at cooking them too. Therefore, it’s not surprising to taste good food in Iligan.
My personal favorite are the following
- Roasted Chicken of Epay’s Chicken
- Seafood Platter of Jackos Kan-anan
- Durian Shake of Iliganon
- Barbecue of B-Bu-Q and Gina’s Barbecue
- Beef Quesadillas & Sweet Potato Fries of Amigos
Have you been to Iligan City? If there’s anything I missed there, tell me in the comments below.
